Total circuit from Delhi: approximately 1,800-2,000 km over 10-12 days. The traditional route follows a west-to-east sequence: Delhi → Haridwar → Barkot (Yamunotri) → Uttarkashi (Gangotri) → Guptkashi (Kedarnath) → Joshimath (Badrinath) → Delhi. All roads are NH/SH with mixed conditions — excellent highways near Delhi, progressively narrower mountain roads.
Delhi to Haridwar: 230 km via NH58, 5-6 hours. Self-drive is feasible to Haridwar/Rishikesh, but mountain sections require experienced hill drivers. Recommended: hire a local taxi from Haridwar (₹18,000-25,000 for 10-day circuit, Innova/Ertiga). Tempo Traveller for groups: ₹30,000-45,000 for 10 days.
NH58 (Delhi-Haridwar): Excellent. Haridwar-Barkot: Mixed, some narrow sections. Uttarkashi-Gangotri: Narrow, landslide-prone in monsoon. Guptkashi-Gaurikund: Good but steep. Joshimath-Badrinath: Under reconstruction (Joshimath subsidence zone).
Delhi to Haridwar: Shatabdi Express (4.5 hours, ₹700-1,200) or Jan Shatabdi (5 hours, ₹300-500). Delhi to Dehradun: Nanda Devi Express (6 hours). From Haridwar/Rishikesh: hire taxi for the mountain circuit. This is the most popular option — comfortable, affordable, and avoids the Delhi-Haridwar drive.
Nearest airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (DED). Flights from Delhi: ₹3,000-6,000 one way (1 hour). From Dehradun, hire taxi to Haridwar (35 km) or directly to Barkot. Flight saves 5-6 hours vs road. Return option: fly out of Dehradun after completing the circuit.
Full Char Dham helicopter packages: ₹1.5L-2.5L per person from Dehradun. Covers all four dhams in 4-5 days with helicopter transfers between dhams. Kedarnath-only helicopter: ₹6,000-8,000 return from Phata/Guptkashi. Book 2-4 weeks in advance during peak season. Weather-dependent — always have a backup plan.
Night 1: Barkot (base for Yamunotri). Night 2-3: Uttarkashi (base for Gangotri). Night 4: Guptkashi (base for Kedarnath). Night 5: Kedarnath (basic lodges). Night 6: Guptkashi (recovery). Night 7-8: Joshimath (base for Badrinath). Night 9: Rishikesh or Haridwar (pre-return rest). Night 10: Delhi.
10 days is the comfortable minimum. 12 days gives buffer for weather delays and rest. 7-8 days is possible with helicopter at Kedarnath but very rushed.
Yes, up to Haridwar/Rishikesh is easy. Mountain roads beyond require an experienced hill driver. We recommend hiring a local driver-guide from Haridwar.
Approximately 1,800-2,000 km round trip from Delhi covering all four dhams. Expect 6-10 hours of driving most days on mountain roads.
