Vrindavan (the playground of Lord Krishna) and Mathura (his birthplace) form the spiritual heart of the Braj region. Together with Gokul, Barsana, and Nandgaon, they offer an immersive devotional experience — colourful temples, ancient ghats along the Yamuna, and some of India's most vibrant festivals. The region is just 150 km from Delhi, making it perfect for a 2-3 day trip.
Most temples open 5:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Afternoon closure (12-4 PM) is for bhog (offering) time. Dress modestly; remove shoes. Photography policies vary — check at entrance.
Banke Bihari Temple (most visited — expect queues, best: early morning), ISKCON Vrindavan (Krishna Balaram Mandir — well-organised, English-friendly), Prem Mandir (stunning white marble, evening light show 7-8 PM), Radha Raman Temple (500-year-old deity, intimate atmosphere), Nidhivan (mysterious sacred grove — visit at dusk), Seva Kunj (garden where Krishna performed Raas Leela).
Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple (birthplace of Krishna — high security, no phones/bags), Dwarkadhish Temple (beautiful architecture, vibrant evening aarti), Vishram Ghat (main ghat on Yamuna — evening aarti similar to Varanasi), Mathura Museum (Kushan-era artefacts, Rs 20 entry).
Gokul (15 km from Mathura — where Krishna grew up, Raman Reti ashram), Barsana (50 km — Radha's village, Lathmar Holi venue, hilltop Radha Rani temple), Nandgaon (55 km — Nanda Baba village, also hosts Lathmar Holi). These can be covered as day trips from Vrindavan.
October-March (winter) is the ideal season — pleasant weather (10-25 degrees C) and major festivals fall in this window. Janmashtami (August/September) is the biggest celebration but extremely crowded. Holi (February/March) is legendary in Braj — Lathmar Holi in Barsana, Phoolon ki Holi at Banke Bihari, and colour celebrations across the region. Summers (April-June) are hot (40-45 degrees C) — avoid unless visiting for a specific occasion.
Covers the essential temples and experiences.

Vrindavan has a wide range — from free dharamshalas to comfortable hotels.
Dharamshalas (ISKCON guesthouse is excellent — Rs 800-1,200, clean rooms with meals), budget hotels near Banke Bihari.
Hotels along the Vrindavan-Mathura highway. AC rooms with modern amenities.
Several ashrams offer free or low-cost accommodation with vegetarian meals. Early-to-bed schedule (lights out by 9 PM). Best for spiritual immersion.
Keep valuables secure at all times (crowded temple areas are targets for pickpockets). No shoes inside temples — carry a bag for them. All food in Vrindavan and Mathura is strictly vegetarian — no eggs, onion, garlic in most restaurants. Auto-rickshaws are the main transport in town (Rs 30-80 per ride, negotiate). Respect temple dress codes — avoid shorts, sleeveless tops. Banke Bihari is extremely crowded on weekends and festivals — visit on weekday mornings.
2 days covers the essential temples. 3 days if you want to add Gokul, Barsana, and Nandgaon. Serious devotees can spend a week doing Braj Parikrama (84 kos circuit).
Generally safe, especially around temple areas and during the day. Standard precautions: avoid isolated areas after dark, dress conservatively. Ashram stays add an extra layer of safety and community.
Holi celebrations in Braj last 2-3 weeks before the main Holi date. Lathmar Holi in Barsana is ~7 days before Holi. Phoolon ki Holi at Banke Bihari is on Ekadashi, ~4 days before Holi. The main colour festival is on the Holi purnima day. Exact dates vary with the lunar calendar.
Possible but tiring. You would leave Delhi by 5 AM, cover 3-4 temples, and return by 10 PM. We recommend at least an overnight stay to experience the evening aartis and early-morning temple atmosphere.
Yes — Vrindavan and the surrounding Braj region is strictly vegetarian. No meat, fish, eggs, onion, or garlic at most restaurants and all temple premises. ISKCON restaurants serve excellent sattvic meals.
Braj Parikrama is a 84-kos (252 km) circular pilgrimage around the entire Braj region covering Vrindavan, Mathura, Gokul, Barsana, Nandgaon, Govardhan Hill, and more. Walking the full parikrama takes 15-20 days. Parts of it can be done by vehicle in 3-4 days.
