Must-See Places in Ladakh

Pangong Tso Lake (4,350m)

The colour-shifting trans-Himalayan lake stretching 134 km along the India–China border — famously featured in the film 3 Idiots. The water shifts from turquoise to deep indigo as light changes across the day.

June–September for full lake access; sunrise at Spangmik is unmissable
From Leh: 160 km (~5 hrs)

May–October (pass open)
From Leh: 40 km (~2 hrs)
Nubra Valley & Hunder Sand Dunes

A high-altitude desert at the confluence of the Shyok and Nubra rivers. The white sand dunes of Hunder are home to rare Bactrian double-humped camels — relics of the ancient Silk Road.

From Leh: 125 km (~4 hrs via Khardung La)
Diskit Monastery & Maitreya Buddha

Founded in 1420 AD, Diskit Monastery houses a towering 32-metre seated Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the Shyok valley and facing the Pakistan border.

Popular Routes in Ladakh

Every Traveltor Ladakh package follows the routes below. Understanding the road network helps you plan transfers, manage altitude gain, and set realistic expectations for driving times.

Delhi → Leh (Flight)
~1 hour
~670 km by air
By Air

Via: Direct flight

The fastest and most common gateway. Morning flights are essential so you land early and have the full day to rest and acclimatize. Book 4–6 weeks in advance for best fares (₹4,000–₹10,000 one-way).

Leh → Khardung La → Nubra Valley
~4 hours
~125 km
By Road

Via: Khardung La Pass (5,359m)

The classic Day 3 route of the Traveltor Ladakh Explorer. You cross Khardung La — one of the world's highest motorable roads — for a brief photo stop, then descend steeply into the desert of Nubra Valley. Ends at Hunder dunes for the Bactrian camel ride.

Nubra Valley → Pangong Tso (Shyok Route)
~5 hours
~150 km
By Road

Via: Shyok River Valley & Agham junction

The scenic Day 4 route — widely considered the most spectacular drive in Ladakh. You follow the jade-green Shyok River for 80+ km through a remote river valley flanked by sand dunes and eroded rock formations before climbing to Pangong.

Pangong Tso → Leh (Chang La Return)
~5 hours
~160 km
By Road

Via: Chang La Pass (5,360m)

The Day 5 return route via Chang La — the second great high pass of the tour at 5,360m. You leave the lake after sunrise, climb Chang La, stop at Thiksey Monastery en route, and reach Leh in time for lunch and your afternoon/evening departure flight.

Manali → Leh (Scenic Road Option)
2 days (1 overnight halt at Sarchu)
~479 km
By Road

Via: Rohtang La, Baralacha La, Lachulung La, Tanglang La (5,328m)

The legendary Manali–Leh highway (NH-3) — a 2-day overland adventure crossing four passes above 4,800m. The route is open June–October. Ideal for travellers who want to acclimatize gradually on the road rather than flying. Not a substitute for an acclimatization day in Leh.

Srinagar → Leh (NH-1 Heritage Route)
2 days (1 overnight halt at Kargil)
~434 km
By Road

Via: Sonamarg, Zoji La Pass (3,528m), Kargil

The historic Silk Road highway linking Kashmir to Ladakh. Lower maximum altitude than the Manali route makes for gentler acclimatization, but you still need a full acclimatization day in Leh on arrival. The Kargil war memorial at Drass is a powerful stop en route.

Altitude Acclimatization Guide

Altitude sickness (AMS) is the number one risk in Ladakh. Leh sits at 3,500m — higher than most Alpine ski resorts. A proper acclimatization day is non-negotiable and is built into every Traveltor Ladakh itinerary.

Acclimatization Tips
  • Arrive by morning flight to maximise daylight acclimatization time
  • Rest completely for the first 4–6 hours after landing
  • Drink 3–4 litres of water daily; avoid alcohol and caffeine
  • Do NOT exert yourself on Day 1 — no short hikes, no rushing around
  • Stay below 3,800m on Day 2 to complete acclimatization before high-pass crossings
  • Carry Diamox (acetazolamide) — consult your doctor before travel
  • Oxygen cylinders are available in Traveltor vehicles on all high-altitude routes
  • Persistent headache despite hydration and rest
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Difficulty sleeping (normal on Day 1, concerning if it worsens)
