Sikkim spans 300m to 8,586m altitude. Gangtok at 1,650m has mild weather year-round, while North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang, Gurudongmar) at 3,500-5,000m is snowbound in winter and inaccessible in monsoon. The Old Silk Route (Zuluk) has its own weather pattern. Your ideal time depends on which Sikkim you want to see.
Clear skies, all roads open, permits easily available. Kanchenjunga views from Gangtok and Pelling are excellent. Temperatures: 5-18°C in Gangtok, -5 to 8°C in North Sikkim. This is peak season — book accommodation 2-3 weeks ahead.
Snow at Tsomgo Lake, Nathang Valley, Yumthang, and Gurudongmar (often inaccessible). Gangtok stays mild (3-12°C). Silk Route to Zuluk stays open but Nathang is 4WD-only. Fewer tourists, lower prices. Best for snow lovers willing to handle cold.
Yumthang Valley becomes the "Valley of Flowers" with rhododendrons blooming (peak: mid-March to late April). Best trekking weather. All regions accessible. Goechala trek season opens. Temperatures warming up.
Heavy rain, landslides on NH10 and North Sikkim roads. Gurudongmar and parts of the Silk Route close. Gangtok gets 500mm+ rain. Not recommended unless you specifically want monsoon greenery and are flexible with plans.
Lachung is accessible but roads to Yumthang and Gurudongmar may be closed due to heavy snow. Check road status 2-3 days before. Carry chains for vehicles.
Mid-March to late April. Yumthang Valley and Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary are the best viewing spots. Peak bloom varies by altitude.
Gangtok and South Sikkim are accessible but expect delays. North Sikkim (above Lachung) and the Silk Route beyond Zuluk are often closed due to landslides.
