Darjeeling Season Overview

Darjeeling sits at 2,134m in the eastern Himalayas. Its weather is driven by altitude and the Bay of Bengal monsoon. The town has four distinct seasons: Spring (March-May), Summer/Monsoon (June-September), Autumn (October-November), and Winter (December-February). Each offers a completely different experience.

October–November: The Golden Window

This is peak season for a reason. Skies are crystal clear after monsoon, Kanchenjunga is visible most mornings, Tiger Hill sunrise success rate is 80%+, and temperatures are pleasant (8-18°C). Crowds are moderate. Hotel rates peak. Book 3-4 weeks ahead.

Pro tip

Late October offers the clearest skies. By mid-November, morning fog starts building, reducing mountain visibility.

December–February: Winter & Snowfall

Temperatures drop to 1-5°C. Snowfall is possible above 2,500m (Tiger Hill, Sandakphu) between December and February, with a 30-50% probability. The town itself rarely gets snow but the surrounding hills do. This is the cheapest season — hotel rates drop 30-40%. Fewer tourists, atmospheric misty mornings.

Snowfall spots

Best chances: Sandakphu (3,636m), Tiger Hill (2,590m), Tonglu (3,070m). Sandakphu trek in January has the highest snow probability.

March–May: Spring Blooms

Rhododendrons bloom across the hills (peak: late March to April). Temperatures are comfortable (10-20°C). Toy Train runs full schedule. Good for families. Easter and spring breaks mean slightly higher prices. Mountain views are decent but haze builds up by May.

June–September: Monsoon

Heavy rainfall (600-800mm), frequent landslides on NH10, reduced visibility. But: cheapest accommodation, fewest crowds, waterfalls at their best, and incredible green landscapes. See our detailed monsoon guide for tips.

Should you go?

Solo travelers and photographers: yes. Families and first-timers: skip to October.
