Darjeeling's monsoon runs from mid-June to mid-September. Peak rainfall hits in July and August, with June and September being transitional. Rainfall averages 600–800mm during this window.
Expect heavy mist, dramatic green hillsides, and near-zero visibility from tea gardens. Tiger Hill sunrise views disappear. The Toy Train runs on a reduced schedule. Roads to Sandakphu and most offbeat villages close.
Fewer tourists (40–50% crowd reduction), cheaper accommodation, lush waterfalls that don't exist in dry season, cooler temperatures (14–18°C), and an intimate, atmospheric town.
NH10 from Siliguri frequently sees landslides and road closures (3–8 hours disruptions common). The route via Rohini Road is safer but slower. Always check road status at rtca.co.in the day before travel.
Tea garden visits (indoor factory tours are excellent), monastery visits (Yiga Choeling in Ghoom, Tiger Hill monastery), Batasia Loop even in mist, Darjeeling Mall Road cafes and bakeries, indoor cooking classes, local market exploration.
Non-negotiables: waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex level), waterproof shoes or gumboots, quick-dry clothing layers, strong umbrella. Optional but useful: dry bags for electronics, anti-leech socks if doing any walking.
If you're a solo traveler, photographer, or someone who loves misty mountain towns, monsoon Darjeeling is genuinely magical. If you need views, sunrises, or plan to trek — go in October–November instead.
July is peak monsoon — heaviest rain, most landslide risk, no mountain views. But it's the cheapest month and the town has an atmospheric, misty charm. Good for budget travelers and photographers, not recommended for first-timers.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs but with reduced frequency. The joyride (Ghoom loop) still operates daily. The full Siliguri–Darjeeling route may be disrupted by track damage.
NH10 (main highway) closes 3–8 hours most weeks due to landslides. Leave early morning (before 6am) to avoid closures. Alternatively, fly into Bagdogra and take the helicopter service to Darjeeling (weather permitting).
