Why May–June is Peak Char Dham Season

Portals open late April. May is the first full month of the season — weather is clear, all facilities are operational, and pilgrims rush to complete the yatra before schools reopen. June continues heavy footfall until monsoon hits around June 20–25. Kedarnath alone sees 15,000–20,000 pilgrims per day in May.

May vs June: Which is Better?

May: Best weather (8–20°C at Kedarnath), all helicopters operational, clear mountain views, longest days. Downside: most crowded. June (first two weeks): slightly less crowded than May, still good weather. June (last two weeks): pre-monsoon clouds build, helicopter cancellation rates rise to 40%, trail gets muddy. Verdict: May 10–31 is the sweet spot — good weather, post-opening rush settled.

Temperature by Location

Haridwar: 25–38°C (hot plains). Guptkashi: 15–25°C (comfortable). Kedarnath: 5–12°C (cold, layers needed). Badrinath: 8–15°C. Always carry warm gear regardless of plains weather.

Crowd Management Tips

Kedarnath: Start the trek at 4–5 AM to beat the mid-morning crowds (the trail gets extremely congested 8 AM–12 PM). Badrinath: Darshan queue can be 3–5 hours on peak days — book VIP darshan online in advance (₹500–1,000). Yamunotri: Least crowded of the four. Gangotri: Moderate crowds, manageable.

Temple Queue Tricks

Online slot booking for Kedarnath and Badrinath is available on the official Devasthanam portal. Book temple darshan slots when you book accommodation — same portal. Weekday mornings (Monday–Wednesday) have 30–40% fewer pilgrims than weekends.

Booking Lead Times for May–June

Hotels near Kedarnath (Guptkashi, Sonprayag): Book 3–4 weeks ahead. Budget dharamshalas fill up same-week but are unpredictable. Kedarnath helicopter: Book 4–6 weeks ahead for May. 2–3 weeks for June. Vehicles: Book your driver/taxi 3–4 weeks ahead for May. 1–2 weeks for early June.

Packing for Summer Char Dham

The plains are hot but the dhams are cold — pack for both extremes in the same bag. Essentials: light cotton for driving days, warm layers for high-altitude temples (0–12°C), rain jacket (June), comfortable walking shoes (broken in), sunscreen SPF 50+, personal medicines, ORS sachets (dehydration at altitude), torch, portable charger. Tip: keep day-trek gear in a small backpack, bulk luggage in vehicle.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

May is better for weather and helicopter reliability. Mid-May (10th–31st) is ideal — fresh season, good facilities, post-opening-rush settled. June first two weeks are acceptable. Avoid late June (pre-monsoon weather, higher cancellations).

Hotels: 3–4 weeks minimum. Kedarnath helicopter: 4–6 weeks for peak May dates. Transport vehicle: 2–3 weeks. Biometric registration: done online, no advance required.

15,000–20,000 pilgrims per day in peak May. The trek trail is busy but not dangerous. Start by 4 AM to get ahead of crowds. Darshan wait at the temple: 1–3 hours on weekdays, 3–5 hours on weekends.

Light showers possible in the first two weeks of June. Heavy monsoon typically hits the region by June 20–25. Pre-June 20 travel is generally safe with a good rain jacket.
