The 16 km Kedarnath trek gains 1,600m altitude and takes 6–8 hours up (4–5 hours down). Helicopter cuts this to a 10-minute flight. Choose helicopter if: you are 60+ years old, have knee/joint issues, have heart or lung conditions, are travelling with young children (under 8), have only 1 day at Kedarnath (no time for trekking), or budget permits and you prefer to save energy for the spiritual experience. Choose trek if: you are physically fit, want the full pilgrimage experience, or are on a tight budget. Note: both options are equally valid for darshan — the helicopter lands just 500m from the temple.
Four helipads operate on the Kedarnath route — each at a different distance from the valley floor. Farther helipads are cheaper but require more ground travel.
Distance from Kedarnath: 8 km (3–4 min flight). Location: 15 km from Guptkashi on the Kedarnath route. Price 2026: ₹8,500–9,500 return. Pros: shortest flight, excellent aerial view of Kedarnath valley, high frequency. Cons: highest price, books fastest in peak season. Operators: Pawan Hans, Heritage Aviation, Global Vectra.
Distance from Kedarnath: 17 km (8–10 min flight). Location: Sitapur village, 2 km from Guptkashi town. Price 2026: ₹7,500–8,500 return. Pros: based in Guptkashi (convenient if staying there), flight over wider valley section. Cons: longer flight (more weather-dependent). Operators: Aryan Aviation, Kestrel Aviation.
Distance from Kedarnath: 22 km (10–12 min flight). Location: Sirsi village, 30 km from Guptkashi. Price 2026: ₹7,000–8,000 return. Pros: middle ground between price and availability. Less crowded booking environment. Operators: Heritage Aviation, Himalayan Heli Services.
Distance from Kedarnath: 35 km (15–18 min flight). Location: Agastmuni town near Rudraprayag, 65 km from Guptkashi. Price 2026: ₹6,500–7,500 return. Pros: cheapest, highest availability even in peak season, last-minute slots often available. Cons: longest drive from base accommodation, longest flight (most weather-sensitive). Operators: Pawan Hans, private charters.
The official Kedarnath helicopter booking portal is irctc.co.in → Helicopter Booking section. This aggregates all licensed operators. Steps: register/login on IRCTC, go to "Helicopter Booking" → Char Dham section, select date + helipad + passengers, choose operator and slot, pay online (UPI, net banking, card accepted). IRCTC portal opens slots 90 days in advance. For peak season (May, June), set a reminder for the date slots open — they fill within hours.
You can also book directly with operators: Pawan Hans (pawanhans.co.in), Heritage Aviation (heritageflights.com), Kestrel Aviation (kestrelheli.in), Global Vectra (globalvectrahelicorp.com), Aryan Aviation. Direct booking sometimes has better availability for same-day or next-day slots. Confirm slot and make payment before travel — walk-in without booking is almost impossible in peak season.
All prices are per person, return journey (both legs). Prices increase 5–10% from opening day to peak season (May–June).
Phata: ₹8,000–8,500. Guptkashi: ₹7,000–7,500. Sirsi: ₹6,500–7,000. Agastmuni: ₹6,000–6,500. Government (Pawan Hans) slots are slightly cheaper (₹500–800 less) than private operators.
Phata: ₹8,500–9,500. Guptkashi: ₹7,500–8,500. Sirsi: ₹7,000–8,000. Agastmuni: ₹6,500–7,500. Group packages (4+ people): negotiable discount of ₹500–1,000 per person with private operators.
Overweight surcharge: if passenger weight exceeds 80 kg, typically ₹500–1,000/kg extra (operator-dependent). Darshan slot booking: separate fee of ₹500–1,000 at the temple (not included in helicopter ticket). Airport security tax: ₹100–200 (included in ticket by most operators).
Passenger weight limit: 80–85 kg per person (weighed at helipad). Excess weight charged extra at the rate stated in your booking confirmation. Carry-on: small bag (max 3–5 kg) only — no large trolleys or suitcases in the helicopter. Leave bulk luggage at your Guptkashi hotel. What to carry in your day bag: ID proof (Aadhaar), booking confirmation, water, snacks, warm layer, any personal medication.
The Kedarnath valley is in a deep gorge — weather changes rapidly. Cancellation rate due to weather: 20–30% on average across the season. Morning slots (6–10 AM) have significantly better weather reliability than afternoon. If your flight is cancelled: you will receive a full refund or can reschedule to next available slot. Operators will contact you via the number on your booking. Always keep a buffer day — never book your return train/flight the same day as your helicopter.
Weather cancellations: full refund from all operators (by regulation). Passenger cancellations: most operators allow free cancellation 48+ hours before; 50% charge within 24 hours; no refund for no-shows. IRCTC portal cancellations: processed within 5–7 working days. Direct operator cancellations: faster (1–2 days).
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for May slots. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for June. For May 1–15 (opening rush), set calendar reminder for when IRCTC opens those dates. If IRCTC portal shows full: check operator direct websites — they occasionally hold back 10–20% of capacity. If all Phata slots are full: try Agastmuni — it has the most seats and is often available when others are sold out. Combine helicopter booking with Kedarnath darshan slot booking (done on the Devasthanam Board portal separately) on the same day.
Return helicopter costs vary by helipad: Phata ₹8,500–9,500, Guptkashi ₹7,500–8,500, Sirsi ₹7,000–8,000, Agastmuni ₹6,500–7,500. Government (Pawan Hans) slots are ₹500–800 cheaper than private operators.
Phata is the most popular and most convenient — shortest flight (3–4 minutes), highest frequency, close to most accommodation. If Phata is booked, try Guptkashi. If on a budget or need last-minute availability, Agastmuni is the best fallback.
You get a full refund or reschedule option. Operators are obligated to refund weather cancellations. Always keep a buffer day — book nothing critical (return flights, onward trains) on the same day as your helicopter slot.
Possible at Agastmuni (lowest demand helipad) or from operators directly if cancellations create availability. In May–June, same-day booking at Phata is nearly impossible. Always book in advance through IRCTC or directly with operators.
Booking is return by default (up and down). One-way tickets exist but are rarely offered — most operators require return booking. If you want to trek down (recommended for those physically able), some operators allow one-way up + trek down for roughly 60–65% of the return price.
Yes. Biometric registration (mandatory for all Char Dham pilgrims) is separate from helicopter booking. Register online at the Devasthanam Board portal or at registration centres in Haridwar/Rishikesh. ₹50 fee. RFID card is checked at all checkposts including the helipad.
